Great Expectations

For Richmond Magazine
Ashe Essays: Great Expectations
Role: Illustrator

Done for the Arthur Ashe commemorative issue of Richmond Magazine, for a piece on the expectations placed on young black tennis players from the sport, society and from themselves.

Pulling from the legendary air about Serena Williams and Arthur Ashe, I used a grande, constellation-like  setting to communicate both the excitement and weight that tennis can impart on black youth.

Illustration of a young, black girl stylized as a constellation, with Serena Williams and Artur Ashe in the background.
