Great Expectations

Ashe Essays: Great Expectations
Role: Illustrator

Illustrated for the Arthur Ashe commemorative issue of Richmond Magazine. For a piece on the expectations placed on young Black tennis players from the sport, society, and themselves.

I created a constellation-like setting around Arthur Ashe and Serena Williams that surrounded the young player. Their almost celestial brilliance highlights the excitement and inspiration—as well as the weight and pressure—that the sport can impart on Black youth.

Illustration of a young Black tennis player serving on a court, with images of Serena Williams and Arthur Ashe super imposed in the background. The illustration is rendered to resemble space and constellations
